Recently, 361 students of grade 12 SMK Pembangunan Jaya vocational high school took the English Communication Competency Test organized by Erlass Institute In preparation for their entry into the workplace. The purpose of the test aims to measure the students’ English proficiency, with the highest total score of 990, with score of 5 to 495 in the Listening test and 5 to 495 in the Reading test.
They took the test in 2 waves on Thursday, April 21 and 28, 2016. During the first test, 182 students took their assigned seats and classrooms for the 2-hour test consisting of the Listening Test (45 minutes) and the Reading Test (75 minutes). The late start to the first test did not dampen students’ spirits as heavy rainfall from the monsoon affected the traffic congestion. The first 2-hour test ended at 11:30 am.
Provided with a set of writing instruments from their school, time was tight as the students from both test dates had to work quickly to answer the test of 100 multiple choice questions of the 45-minute Listening Test including 10 questions of Photographs Section; 30 questions of Question-Response; 30 questions of Conversations and 30 questions of Talks. Students then proceed to the 75-minute Reading Test including 40 questions Incomplete sentences; 12 questions of Text completions and 48 questions of Reading Comprehension.
The second English Communication Competency Test took place one week later, with the remaining 179 students scheduled to take the test. The students’ test scores will be placed in a certificate and show their level of proficiency with regards to the following range of scores:
